Skip the take out and delivery fees and make your own healthier orange chicken at home! This Chicken is made healthier by air frying the chicken without any oil then tossed in a homemade orange sauce.

As you may already know, Chinese Take Out isn’t the healthiest food option. Often loaded with a lot of sodium, sugar and made with lots of oil.

But this recipe is a much lighter orange chicken recipe! Made with less sodium and sugar, and crisped up in an air fryer without any oil. It’s a lot more calorie conscious than the take out version without sacrificing the taste!

Watch how it’s made!

Course dinner, Main Course
Servings 3 servings

Ingredients

For the chicken,

  • 2 chicken breast, trimmed
  • ⅓ cup cornstarch
  • ⅓ cup all purpose flour
  • 2 eggs
  • salt and pepper

For orange sauce

  • ½ cup fresh orange juice, 2-3 oranges
  • zest of one orange
  • 2 tbsp jarred pre-minced garlic, or 2 cloves grated
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • ½ tbsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • ¼ cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • cornstarch slurry (1 tbsp cornstarch + 1 tbsp water)

Instructions

For chicken,

  • Preheat the air fryer to 350.
  • Mix cornstarch, flour, salt and pepper in a shallow dish. Whisk egg in a separate shallow dish.
  • Cut chicken in half lengthwise, then into ½ inch thick slices.
  • Dip chicken in egg mixture then into flour mixture. Knock off excess flour then place into heated air fryer basket in a single layer.
  • Air fry chicken for 6-7 minutes, flipping halfway. Remove to a plate and repeat with remaining chicken.

For sauce,

  • In a small bowl, mix 1 tbsp cornstarch with 1 tbsp water.
  • Mix all remaining ingredients together in another bowl.
  • Add orange sauce and cornstarch slurry to a large pan or wok over medium heat for about 3-4 minutes or until sauce starts to simmer and thicken.
  • Reduce heat to low, toss in chicken. Mix until evenly coated.
